What We Do

How Empower Play Supports Athletes

Practical Support for the Challenges That Come With Sports

Being an athlete can be exciting and rewarding—but it can also come with pressure, stress, injuries, changes in playing time, school demands, relationships, and major life transitions. Empower Play helps athletes and athletic organizations navigate those challenges.

Our approach is proactive, practical, and athlete-centered. We don't provide traditional clinical therapy. Instead, we offer support, guidance, coaching, and connections to trusted professionals when an athlete needs more specialized care. We work with athletic organizations, coaches, athletes, and families to help address concerns early, strengthen team culture, and make sure athletes have the right support around them.

01 | Athlete Support & Early Intervention

Recognizing When an Athlete May Need Support

Sometimes a coach or staff member notices that an athlete isn't quite themselves—a change in attitude, performance, relationships, attendance, or behavior. Knowing what to do next isn't always easy. Empower Play helps organizations recognize potential concerns early and determine what kind of support may be appropriate. The goal is to address challenges before they grow into bigger problems.

  • Recognizing signs that an athlete may be struggling
  • Talking through concerns and determining next steps
  • Helping coaches and staff know when to step in
  • Connecting athletes and families with appropriate resources
  • Creating clear processes for responding to concerns
  • Supporting athletes through stressful or difficult situations
Goal: Don't wait until an athlete is in crisis to offer support.
02 | Connections & Care Coordination

Getting Athletes to the Right People

Sometimes an athlete needs more than coaching or a conversation. They may need a therapist, physician, psychiatrist, academic support, nutrition professional, or another specialist. Finding the right person—and knowing where to start—can be overwhelming for athletes, families, and teams. Empower Play helps organizations build trusted connections and navigate the process of getting the support they need.

  • Building a network of trusted professionals
  • Connecting athletes and families with appropriate resources
  • Helping navigate available services
  • Coordinating support between the people involved in an athlete's care
  • Helping teams develop a clear referral process
  • Providing follow-up and support as athletes move through the process
Goal: Make it easier for athletes to get the right help at the right time.
03 | Team Leadership & Culture

Strong Teams Start With Strong Relationships

A team's culture affects how athletes communicate, handle conflict, respond to setbacks, and support one another. Empower Play helps teams develop the people skills that can make a difference both on and off the field. This isn't about creating a perfect team. It's about helping athletes become better teammates and leaders.

  • Team communication and leadership development
  • Peer mentoring and positive role models
  • Building trust and accountability
  • Managing conflict and navigating team dynamics
  • Helping athletes handle difficult conversations
  • Developing positive team leaders and culture
Goal: Build a team environment where athletes can compete hard and communicate openly.
04 | Transitions & Life Beyond Sports

Helping Athletes Navigate What's Next

Sports can change quickly. Recruitment, changing teams, redshirting, injuries, loss of playing time, transferring, graduation, or the end of a playing career can leave athletes wondering, “What happens now?” Empower Play helps athletes navigate these transitions and the challenges that come with them—because being an athlete is a big part of someone's life, but it doesn't have to be their entire identity.

  • Recruitment and transition to a new level of competition
  • Injury and recovery support
  • Redshirting and transfer-portal transitions
  • Changes in playing time or team role
  • Preparing for life after competitive sports
  • Building confidence and identity beyond the jersey
Goal: Help athletes adjust, move forward, and feel confident about what's next.
Individualized Life Coaching

Strategic Growth for Athletes

Helping Athletes Handle the Mental Side of Sports and Life

Even talented, motivated athletes can get stuck. Pressure, self-doubt, perfectionism, relationships, time management, setbacks, and high expectations can all affect performance. Empower Play provides individualized life coaching and practical support to help athletes work through those challenges.

Achieving Goals and Mindset
Schedules & Priorities

Time & Schedule Management

Practice schedules, travel, family, and academic loads can quickly overwhelm student-athletes without intentional structure. We build practical routines that help athletes manage competing priorities, restore balance, and stay organized.

Athletic Leadership & Confidence
Confidence & Mindset

Building Confidence

Self-doubt and perfectionism can hinder performance. We focus on actionable mental strategies to build durable confidence, silence negative self-talk, and help athletes trust their preparation in high-stakes moments.

Handling Pressure and Setbacks
Pressure & Setbacks

Handling Pressure & Adversity

Slumps, injuries, and high expectations test mental toughness. We equip athletes with practical tools to process frustration, manage pressure with poise, and stay focused during challenging periods.

Athlete Relationships & Team Dynamics
Communication & Trust

Strengthening Relationships

Interpersonal dynamics with coaches, teammates, agents, and family shape athletic trajectories. We help athletes improve communication, navigate complex relationships, and handle difficult conversations with confidence.

Personal Accountability and Habits

Realistic Goals & Better Habits

Your body and mind are your greatest assets. We empower athletes with self-discipline, smart habit-building, and proactive routines to safeguard physical and mental well-being while achieving clear goals.

Preparing for What's Next

Life beyond competition brings profound emotional and professional shifts. Whether navigating injury, recruitment, or post-athletic careers, we craft a strategic roadmap and build confidence beyond the jersey.

The Goal: Help athletes become more confident, capable, and prepared—not just as athletes, but as people.
A Distinct Perspective

What Makes Empower Play Different?

We Look at the Whole Athlete.

Athletes don't leave their personal lives at the door when they walk into practice. What happens at home, in school, in relationships, or in an athlete's own head can show up on the field.

Empower Play brings a social work perspective into the sports environment, giving athletes and athletic organizations another layer of support.

“We don't replace coaches, athletic trainers, medical professionals, or therapists. We work alongside them.”

When an issue falls outside our role, we help connect the athlete with the appropriate professional or resource.

The Goal is Simple

Help athletes get the support they need so they can be healthier, more confident, and better prepared to succeed in sports and in life.

Social Work Experience. Sports-Focused Support.

Alyssa Gaggino, LMSW, is a Licensed Master Social Worker with more than 17 years of professional social work experience and a Sports Social Work Certificate earned in 2025.

Throughout her career, Alyssa has worked with people and families navigating real-life challenges—and she brings that experience into the athletic environment.

She understands that athletes are managing much more than their sport. School, relationships, family, injuries, pressure, expectations, identity, and major life changes can all affect an athlete's ability to perform and enjoy their sport.

Her sports social work training has allowed her to bring that professional experience into a specialized focus on athletes and athletic organizations. Alyssa works with athletes, coaches, athletic leaders, and families to help identify challenges, provide practical support, and connect athletes with the right resources when additional care is needed.

Empower Play is about supporting the whole athlete—while understanding the competitive environment they are part of.

The goal isn't to take the athlete out of their sport. It's to help them navigate the challenges that come with it so they can be successful on the field, in the classroom, and in life.
